Good to see that Amazon (AMZN) either takes the lead or joins the row of companies and corporations that leave plastic pillows as filling material in carton packaging behind: https://lnkd.in/e3Th6VZiThe more plastic packaging can be avoided, the better it is. The question is whether we can achieve the same with styrofoam and other materials, to eventually end up using only recycled paper or other equally applicable waste materials, to thus introduce a full cycle. In the end, the choices should be nearly endless, since the requirements are few: It just needs to be flexible and formable so that it can stabilise a product within a carton. Likewise, another study came out pointing out that trash heaps are amongs the largest emitters of PFAS: Ashley M. Lin et al. (2024). Landfill Gas: A Major Pathway for Neutral Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substance (PFAS) Release. In: Environmental Science & Technology Letters. DOI: https://lnkd.in/eWiiG5GjThis comes after we learnt three years ago that they are also amongst the largest emitters of methane:Maasakkers, J. D., Varon, D. J., Elfarsdóttir, A., McKeever, J., Jervis, D., Mahapatra, G., ... & Aben, I. (2021). Using satellites to uncover large methane emissions from landfills. DOI: https://lnkd.in/euZaJ3tmAnd those trash heaps are not borne out of thin air: It's because people continue producing (plastic) waste. Of course it's Utopian at the moment to expect people to live without (non-biodegradable) wastes, but there is always another opportunity to cut down one's waste production, until there isn't. Still, the fewest could tell that they had cut down each and every option. On the television programme and on the internet, people like to point fingers at corporations only, that they were the scourge of human welfare and perseverance. But companies rely on the consumers' decision-making, they are like computers: they react upon impact. So, consumers must react so that companies can without risking their own personal perserverance. The more the craving for more biodegradable and generally less packaging, the more attractive it becomes for companies to experiment with and invest in apparent alternatives. As long as it remains an expensive luxury for both sides, this will not change.

📦 That's a pretty good signal when it comes from Amazon. There is only one fulfillment center for now, so there is still a long way to go, but better #packaging practices are gaining momentum. Some of the wins here ✅ 🛢 Fossil-derived polymers ▶ cellulose-based materials ☑ ♻ Poorly recyclable flexible plastics ▶ curbside recyclable paper ☑ ⚖ Oversized boxes ▶ made-to-fit paper bags, up to 90% lighter ☑🔄 Plastic air pillow ▶ 100% recycled paper fillers ☑🏭 No brand new machines needed ▶ Retrofitting existing ones ☑Some questions❓Is this just paper? I have never seen a stretchable, glue-free heat-sealing paper without coating, liner, or aqueous solution. Missing details on the material and technology used 🧐 We are not there yet 📣 Switching all our plastic packaging to paper is not a long-term sustainable solution.🌲 3 billion trees are cut down every year to make packagingWe need to invest massively in #treefree paper, and leverage on cellulose-rich agricultural waste or residues such as #hemp, #straw, #flax, #sugarcane etc.🌾 #packaging #paper #singleuse #plasticpackaging #agriwaste #agrowaste#plastic #plasticwaste #recycling #paperpackaging #sustainablepackagingCanopySource Greenhttps://lnkd.in/gbN-wrEX

We often get asked by our clients if expendable or returnable packaging will offer them more cost savings. Well… the answer is complicated, to say the least, and depends on the product being shipped and a company’s supply chain needs. However, we’ve come up with a few general guidelines if you’re just not sure which direction to take.https://lnkd.in/gtXwzHUf
